What is vaporizing or vaping?


Thanks to greatly improved vaporizing technology, vaping has become popular with both smokers and non-smokers. Vaping is in many cases used as an alternative to smoking*. With smoking no longer allowed in most bars and restaurants, vaping offers what many consider a great alternative to walking outside to have a cigarette. Vaping does not produce any smoke, only vapor. This vapor dissipates quickly and leaves only a small whiff of its scent (which still smells as DELICIOUS as it tastes!).

*Please note: At this time, portable vaporizers (e-cigs) have not been approved by the FDA as a smoking cessation device.



What is e-juice (e-liquid)?


E-juice (also known as e-liquid) is a liquid used in vaporizers (also known as e-cigs or e-cigarettes). E-juice is a fluid that is turned into breathable vapor inside of a portable vaporizer or e-cig.

How long does the battery of a vaporizer kit (e-cig) last?


E-cig (vaporizer) batteries come in several milli-amp hour (mAh) sizes:

650mah: The standard for light smokers, non-smokers, or those with smaller hands. Also the most portable and concealable battery for pockets and purses.

900mah: For light smokers, heavier smokers, and people who like to travel with their vaporizers throughout the day.

1100mah: The go-to battery for daily use! This battery will typically last most of the day when used heavily.



Are vaporizers (e-cigs) allowed in public places?


Portable vaporizers and e-cigs are typically allowed in public where smoking may be prohibited. Please ensure that you check with the establishment (bar, restaurant, shopping, etc.) as some vendors may not allow the use of e-cigs. In most cases after vendors learn that it is electronic and does not contain Nicotine, they will usually allow it. It also tends to attract interest from others around you!



Is it safe?


Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 toxic chemicals. No actual smoke is involved with e-cigarettes only vapor. Smoke is the real health hazard. E-cigarettes deliver nicotine by inhaling a vaporized nicotine solution (composed of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and flavoring) without tar, carbon monoxide, flame retardants, pesticides, etc.



What is PG and/or VG?


The liquid used in electronic cigarettes, often called E-Liquid, is usually a base mixture of Propylene Glycol (PG) and/or Vegetable Glycerin (VG) with flavoring and/or nicotine added according to preference.  As the vapor is inhaled by the user they are able to both taste the flavoring and absorb the nicotine that is diluted in the E-liquid, if any.


Both PG and VG are considered GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the FDA and EPA.  They are common ingredients found in many of the foods we eat, cosmetics we use, medications we take, and common household items such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and soap. They are also used in the fog machines used in theaters and night clubs.


PG is a very thin liquid that dilutes and carries flavors very well, making it the optimal base for mixing, but when thinned out even further by the addition of flavoring and nicotine it may produce less vapor.  Also, a very small percentage of the population experiences a sensitivity to PG that may present itself in a number of ways from throat irritation to skin irritation.  However, most people with this sensitivity are still able to use liquids that contain a lower amount of PG without any negative effects.


VG is a slightly sweet and very thick liquid in its pure form, which results in much higher vapor production than PG.  However, the downside to this thickness is that it may cause wicking, clogging, or burning issues in some devices if the VG concentration in the liquid is too high.  Also, due to the inherent sweetness of VG it tends to alter or dull the flavor slightly and reduce the amount of throat hit experienced by the user.


Ultimately, the E-Liquid mixture percentages of each user are merely personal preference based on the tradeoff between flavor, throat hit, and vapor production.  However, it is recommended for most devices that no more than 15-20% VG be used in the E-Liquid to provide a boost in vapor production without the negative effects of higher VG concentrations.


Overview of Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juice


Many beginners and even some of more experienced vapers still confuse and are unsure about the differences between Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) e-juice. To help you understand better and learn some background information, pros and cons, and differences we created this tutorial. First things first, let’s start with some background and terminology. The term PG is an abbreviation for Propylene Glycol, and the term VG comes from Vegetable Glycerin.


Typical e-juice or e-liquid contains four ingredients. These ingredients are Propylene Glycol (PG) or Vegetable Glycerin (VG), water, flavoring, and nicotine. In many cases manufacturers of e-juice mix PG and VG to get benefits of both ingredients. To better understand the differences between the properties of PG and VG juices, we will compare 100% Propylene Glycol e-juice to 100% Vegetable Glycerin. At the end of the tutorial we will touch on mixtures of both types of ingredients, but for now let’s focus on pure Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juice.


Background on Propylene Glycol (PG)


Propylene Glycol is an organic compound produced from Propylene Oxide. It is colorless, nearly odorless, and retains low viscosity. Food grade Propylene Glycol is recognized safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The main applications for Propylene Glycol are solvents, humectants, preservatives in food, tobacco products, pharmaceutical products, and of course e-juice.


Overview of Propylene Glycol (PG) E-juice


Propylene Glycol (PG) is the more popular e-liquid base, for many reasons. To start, it is less viscous than Vegetable Glycerin and easier to handle when (re)filling your atomizer, cartomizer, or clearomizer. Another benefit of low viscosity is coil build up or gunk which accumulates over time. Propylene Glycol (PG) has low density which means you will get less gunk when compared to Vegetable Glycerin (VG).


Furthermore, it is absorbed much faster by wick material and polyfill fabric, which means that you can start vaping faster. Since Propylene Glycol is tasteless and odorless there is little or no flavor distortion. In fact PG-based e-juices produce highest flavor intensity and throat hit of the two substances. Also vapor feels warmer since it takes less time and power for Propylene Glycol to reach the level of vaporization. The negative aspects of PG-based are rare cases of allergic reaction, but we will go in more details about safety and health issues further down in the tutorial. Also, Propylene Glycol (PG) e-juices produce less dense vapor, which is considered by many a con.


Background on Vegetable Glycerin (VG)


Vegetable Glycerin is an all-natural liquid generally extracted from plant oils, in particular, soy, coconut oil, and palm oil. It is typically clear with little hint of color, odorless, in some cases sweet, and relatively viscous. Like Propylene Glycol it is considered safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The main applications of Vegetable Glycerin are cosmetics products, food production, and e-juice.


Overview of Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juice


Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is less popular when compared to Propylene Glycol (PG) base. It has much higher viscosity, which makes it a perfect base for vapers who love a thicker and higher density vapor cloud. It is easier on your throat which means it delivers less throat hit. Unlike PG base, Vegetable Glycerin contains preexisting flavor and sweetness. This means that in many cases the added flavoring will be diluted and final product (e-liquid) will be sweeter. When comparing Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juices in terms of flavor intensity, Vegetable Glycerin (VG) tends to deliver duller flavors. Another negative aspect of VG base is gunk residue, because of high density and consistency of VG you will notice faster and build up around your coil and inside walls of your e-juice delivery device. Furthermore, higher viscosity of Vegetable Glycerin (VG) typically requires more power and longer time to achieve optimal vaping temperature. When using in devices that employ polyfill and wick materials, allow for additional time after refilling for e-juice to be absorbed before starting to vape.


Mixing Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG)


Most of the manufactures of e-juices today mix both PG and VG together to retain positive properties of both substances. Different manufacturers have different proportions but typically you would see 50/50, 60/40 or 70/30 ratios of Propylene Glycol (PG) to Vegetable Glycerin (VG). By combining the two substances you achieve a balance in terms of flavor intensity, throat hit, and vapor density.

Safety and Health Issues for Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juice


Both Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) are considered safe and acceptable substance to be ingested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In fact both substances are part of many types of food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. That said, there are rare cases of minor allergic reaction to Propylene Glycol (PG). Typical allergic reaction consists of skin irritation or rash, and/or minor throat inflammation. In most cases people who are allergic to Propylene Glycol (PG) already know that since it is used in many foods and day-to-day products. However, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms when vaping PG-based e-juice, stop immediately, allow for sufficient time for your body to recover, and switch to VG-based e-juice.



What are the side effects to vaping?


There are no real side effects and there hasn’t been any actual case studies on the matter either. If you just quit smoking and now are using an electronic cigarette, you may get a case of the ‘dull head’ or feel a bit nauseous.  If you are feeling any of these type symptoms, it’s because you aren’t giving your body those chemicals that were in a cigarette.



Will a higher MG produce a better throat hit?


The higher the nicotine content, the greater the throat hit.  It does not mean you will get more vapor.  PG will also help with a better throat hit.  VG will have less throat hit, but produce better vapor.



What does the nicotine strength mean?


E-liquid is available in various strengths, from no nicotine at all, right up to very high strength flavorless liquid for mixing your own custom blends. The strength is denoted as a milligram level per milliliter (mg/ml) or as a percentage. For example, a 24mg strength e-liquid contains 24mg nicotine per ml of liquid or expressed as a percentage, approximately 2.4% nicotine.



How often should I charge my battery?


When you first receive your kit, the batteries will commonly contain some charge, so you may only need to charge them for a shorter time than the normal full charging duration. Once you are regularly using your device, we recommend that you always have one battery on charge or already charged whilst you are using the other. Depending on your personal vaping habits, you can realistically expect a 650mAh EVOD style battery to last anything from 3 to 8 hours before needing to be re-charged. If you are using larger capacity batteries in a high-end or “mod” device, you will usually experience much longer battery life. Remember never to leave batteries on charge unattended.



How Long Does the Battery Life of a Vaporizer Last, On Average?


The main variable to consider when answering this particular question comes down to the battery’s manufacturer; different manufacturers focus on different quality levels and e-cig battery sizes. With that being said, most 900 mAh batteries are good for roughly 800 puffs, 650 mAh batteries for 400 puffs, and 1100 mAh batteries for 1,000 puffs. Once again, those numbers are general estimations that can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer as much as from user to user.



What Affects Battery Life?


Several factors modify battery life, including amperage, the model of your clearomizer / cartomizer / tank, the size of the battery, and the battery’s manufacturer. For example, the iTaste VV V3.0 battery is engineered for charging 250-300 times and can last up to two days on a full charge; with these variables, a user can expect up to two years of service from the 800 mAh battery. These durations scale with the size of the battery; larger batteries will stay functional for a longer period of time, while smaller batteries will die out sooner than that period.



Overview of Atomizer vs. Cartomizer vs. Clearomizer


Atomizer, Cartomizer, and Clearomizer are device that you screw on a battery or power supply to deliver e-juice (e-liquid) in a vapor form. These are three major type of devices on the market today. All three type of devices work on the same principle of heating e-juice to a temperature of vaporization. It is important to note that there is no clear winner between Atomizer, Cartomizer, and Clearomizer. Some people prefer one over the other, and each has its own pros and cons which we will discuss in more details below.


Overview of an Atomizer


Atomizers are one of the original devices. They have a fairly small capacity and are best for people who prefer dripping. There are different design but majority of atomizers have a heating coil on the bottom with metal mesh on top of the coil. Some atomizers utilize silica wick instead of metal mesh.

Perfect for dripping, which means that you can switch between different flavors of juices pretty fast

Cons of an Atomizer


If you vape a lot, you need to continuously refill an atomizer

Overview of a Cartomizer


Cartomizers are similar in design to the atomizer. The big difference is that cartomizers have polyfill wrapped around a heating coil. A polyfill soaks e-juice and allows for longer vape time over atomizer. There are some designs of cartomizers that are housed inside a larger cylindrical tank that holds even larger capacity of e-juice.

Overview of a Clearomizer


Clearomizers are one of the newest and most popular devices on the market. These type of devices are usually cylindrical and feature a clear polycarbonate plastic or Pyrex glass tank. A clear tank allows you to see the level of e-juice inside of a clearomizer. E-juice is delivered to the heating coil by ways of a silica wick. Some designs feature top heating coil with longer wicks, others have bottom placed heating coil with short wicks which allows for easier wick saturation.


Pros of a Clearomizer


Large capacity for e-juice, typically around 1.6 – 3ml

Clear tank allows you to see exact amount of e-juice left inside of the clearomizer

Some models are rebuildable, and come with replaceable coil

Longer life-cycle

Some people claim that clearmizers with wick system offer superior flavor delivery


Cons of a Clearomizer


Usually more expensive than atomizers or cartomizers

May retain flavor from previous e-juice

May leak depending on manufacturer and model

Top coil design may require you to tip clearomizer to absorb left over e-juice



Significance of Variable Voltage and Vaping Power Chart


Modern electronic cigarettes come with many features and one of these features is variable voltage. Not every e-cigarette comes with option of variable voltage, some already come with preconfigured constant power output. These types of e-cigarette are simple to use and more suitable for beginners. They deliver predesigned power to model specific atomizer, cartomizer, or clearomizer. However, more advance users prefer an option of variable voltage which allows them to control power output to achieve ideal vapor production. The main reason why you would choose a variable voltage electronic cigarette over constant power e-cigarette, is the variety of different types and brands of atomizers, cartomizers, and clearomizers on the market today. Different types and brands of atomizers, cartomizers, and clearomizers all have one thing in common, they all have some type of heating coil which converts power delivered by your batter to heat. The heating coil can have different resistance level, which simply means that it requires different power levels to achieve ideal heating temperature. Consequently, variable voltage option allows you to set ideal power output depending on brand and model of atomizers, cartomizers, and clearomizers you are using. It is important to note that highest voltage is usually not ideal power setting and can lead to burning of e-juice or even risk of coil burnout. Therefore, always pay attention to Ohm rating of atomizers, cartomizers, and clearomizers when purchasing one.


An Ohm rating indicates resistance level of a heating coil inside e-juice delivery device. Lower level (or Ohms) require lower power level to achieve proper and safe heating temperature. Higher level require higher power output. If set voltage exceeds designed resistance level, you will get a burned taste and it can even can lead to the coil burning out completely. If voltage is set too low with respect to resistance level, vapor production will be low and inefficient.


So to help you with ideal voltage setting you will need two things: resistance level of your e-juice delivery device (indicated in Ohms) and Vaping Power Chart. The Vaping Power Chart indicates ideal power level or voltage for specific resistance level indicated in Ohms.


How to Use Variable Voltage and Vaping Power Chart


Find resistance level (in Ohms) on packaging of your atomizer, cartomizer, or clearomizer

Locate row for this resistance level on left side of the chart

Follow this row to the right until you locate cell (or cells) indicated by light green color

The corresponding number on top of the chart for a specific cell indicates voltage level required to achieve certain power output

If there are more than one light green cell within the specific row, it means that there is a range of ideal voltage level. It is up to you to decide which level works and taste better for you. Play around with different voltage within the range, but try to stay within light green area.
